psani

Psani beach is located west of the port of Nafpaktos. It is very long and together with the beach of Varia, which is located at its continuation, the coast has a total length of about 5km.

On its coastal road named “Navmachia Nafpaktos” one can find many restaurants, taverns, cafeterias and pastry shops which operate all year round and satisfy the desires of every visitor.

The road at the upper part of the coast, running the entire length of the beach, has large sidewalks and a double-traffic pedestrian street, under the shade of century-old plane trees.

In fact, for about 1 km it is closed to car traffic throughout the summer, offering even greater safety for walkers, families and cyclists.

The beach continues for about 4 more kilometres, after the torrent of Varia, heading west towards the settlement of Paleopanagia. The beach of Psani is ideal for families with young children as it has a clean beach with fine pebbles, lukewarm water and an organised modern playground.

It is recommended for swimming when there is a strong wind or a light north wind. Except in summer, during the rest of the year it is ideal for walks along the coastal road with plane trees and a view of the Rio-Antirrio bridge.

tip: Unique view when swimming in Psani, towards its Venetian Castle and the pine-clad hill!

gribovo

Its name, in Slavic, means an area with a lot of running water. It is more than 1 km long and is located east of the Venetian harbour. It has fine pebbles and dark sand and is an extremely shallow beach. It is fully equipped with showers and changing rooms, and has a number of restaurants, ouzo bars, cafes and pastry shops. From the beach of Gribovos, you can enjoy every hour of the day, the exceptional view of the natural bay of Nafpaktos and distinguish the five successive walls of the walls, from the port to the acropolis of the Venetian castle, at the highest point of the steep hill 200 meters high.

To the west of the beach there is a pond with ducks and swans, which show excellent signs of familiarity with passers-by, while next to the “duckies” there is a modern playground for children’s recreation.

It has large pavements for pedestrians and a dual-carriageway cycle path under the imposing century-old plane trees. Also, the entire coastal road called “Kathodus Dorion” is closed to vehicular traffic throughout the summer and ends in a small forest with towering eucalyptus trees, next to the bmx park and the Nafpaktos Nautical Club.

On the eastern side of the beach, there is the neighborhood of Aphrodite, where you can see the “fountain of love”. A local myth wanted the goddess Aphrodite to bathe here. The illegible ancient Greek inscriptions on a rock near the fountain are thought to belong to the sanctuary of Asclepius, which was located here.

tip : Enjoy a sunset and the unique view it offers!

palaiopanagia

The beach of Paleopanagia is one of the beaches of Nafpaktos and is located near the beach of Psani, to the west. It provides municipal free sunbeds during the summer season and you can enjoy a peaceful swim in this small beach.
The crowd of visitors who prefer Paleopanagia enjoys, the stunning view of the Rio-Antirrio Bridge.

antirrio

The settlement is built on the northern boundary of the strait of Rio – Antirrio on the cape of Antirrio. In antiquity it was called Molykryon, after the ancient city of Molykria or Molycria which was located nearby (this is the archaeological site at Ellinika, in Velvina Nafpaktos).

After the Ottoman conquest, Antirrio gained strategic importance due to the construction of the homonymous castle there and became the target of several military operations: in 1603 it was temporarily occupied by the Knights of Ioannina, while in the following years the castle was destroyed during the Venetian-Turkish wars, only to be repaired by the Venetians. It later passed again under Ottoman rule, in which it remained almost throughout the Greek Revolution until 1829, the year in which it was liberated.

Today the settlement is a transport hub between Western Sterea and the Peloponnese. The connection is made by a ferry boat that runs the route Antirrio – Rio, but also by the modern, largest cabled bridge in the world of Rio-Antirrio, named after its initiator, and called “Charilaos Trikoupis”.

Overlooking Rio and the Rio-Antirrio bridge you can enjoy your coffee and swim at the beach of Antirrio. In Antirrio you will find easy parking, eat food from neat little shops, go for a bike ride, walk and also gaze at the Patraikos Gulf. Antirrio is 9km from Nafpaktos.

ΜΑΚΥΝΕΙΑ

Makyneia is a holiday village with beautiful beaches and clear seas, which are famous for their fine sand, as well as for their warm and shallow waters. Particularly picturesque is the small harbour with its fishermen, who supply the village’s famous fish taverns with fresh fish and seafood.

Further north of the village is the small theatre of the ancient city of Makyneia (in summer theatre performances are often hosted). The picturesque settlements of Agrapidokampos with its famous spa, especially in spring, and Riza at the roots of Klokova are also picturesque. In the northern part of the Agrapidokambos plain, the Church of Zoodochos Pigi is situated in a panoramic location among old oak trees.

The visitor has the opportunity to engage in water sports, horseback riding, hiking on the mountain of Klokova and visit the botanical garden of Zelios. It is 13 km from Nafpaktos and 4.5 km from Antirrio.

kato vasiliki

In the shadow of eastern Varasova is the seaside settlement of Kato Vasiliki. It is an attraction for many holidaymakers, especially during the summer months as it has wonderful beaches (Kato Vasiliki and Limnopoula), beautiful nature and important archaeological sites.

On the hill of Agia Triada, east of the settlement, the ruins of the acropolis of the ancient city of “Chalkis” are preserved, which is mentioned in Homer’s Iliad. On the south-eastern side of Varasova, parts of the imposing walls of the fortified castle of Pagkali, which was a refuge for the inhabitants in case of hostile threats, are preserved.

The large three-aisled early Christian basilica dominates the hill of the Holy Trinity. The church was built in the 5th century AD and within the early Christian church there are ruins of a smaller Byzantine church with a storage room, a bank, cells and a cemetery.

From Kato Vasiliki you can visit by boat the enclosure of Agios Nikolaos in Varasova, while a short distance from the settlement is the Byzantine church of Panagia Panaxiotissa.

Every year on August 6, the day of the Saviour, the Cultural & Cultural Association of Vasiliki organizes the “Feast of the Goat” on the beach of the village. During the celebration, participants have the opportunity to fish a traditional trawl, taste roasted sardines and enjoy a unique traditional feast.

tip : At the beginning of August every summer, the biggest beach party of the region is organized on the beach of Limnopoula.

kryoneri

The beach of Kryoneri is located about 45 km west of the town of Nafpaktos. It is known for its picturesque landscape as the mountain range of Varasova, the Holy Mountain of Aetolia, which is one of the most famous climbing spots in Greece, rises steeply to the right of the beach, while the Patraikos Gulf stretches to the horizon.
Its name comes from the cold waters of the spring that gushes up the rock and then pours into the sea, lowering its temperature and salt content. Ideal for children, as the water is shallow for a long distance. The beach is organised and there are also cafes and restaurants with fresh seafood.
