It is a good choice for easy-small hiking if one wants a panoramic view of the Corinthian and Patras Gulf. The starting point of the hike is located about 25 km from Nafpaktos, and is accessible by accessible by car. After about 3,5 km, 330 meters of altitude difference and a little less than 1 hour we are at the top.
Varasova, also known as the “Holy Mountain” of Aetolia, is located between Messolonghi and Nafpaktos and has an altitude of 917 meters. It has many caves and ascetics as during the Byzantine period it was a centre of monasticism. Although with a low altitude it is well known to climbers because of its geomorphology and is an international climbing centre. The most common hike starts from the village of Ano Basiliki (25 km from Nafpaktos) and is of moderate difficulty due to the slope and some difficult points. The total duration is about 4 hours after the 8 km hike. On the imposing rocks of the summit, above the
well, we can enjoy the view of the plain and the lagoon of Messolonghi, the Patraikos Gulf, and Klokova.
Vardousia is a mountain cluster that includes the southernmost end of Pindos in Central Greece. The highest peak is that of Korakas, at 2,495 metres. The most common ascent starts from the village of Athanasios Diakos (2 hours from Nafpaktos) and takes 9- 10 hours after traversing 19-20 kilometres and 1,400 metres altitude difference. It can be done in two days, staying overnight either in a tent or in the shelter. Apart from this hike there are many more that can be walked, as well as many climbing routes.
Tsekoura (1.732 meters) is the second highest mountain of Nafpaktia. Its ascent is a wonderful hike, initially in a fir forest and finally on its stony ridge.
It starts from the point “Stavros”, next to the village of Kryoneria, the which is 1 hour and 45 minutes from Nafpaktos, and the total duration is not more than 5 hours. From the top you can enjoy the impressive view of Vardousia, the artificial lake of Evinos and the other peaks of the mountainous Nafpaktia.
Tsakalaki (1.710 meters) is located opposite to Tsekoura, and southwest of Ano Chora. One can reach the peak either from the north side and the village of Podos ( 1 hour and 20 minutes from Nafpaktos ) by a 4-5 hour hike, or from the west side and the fountain of Papadia, next to the village of Agia Kyriaki (1 hour from Nafpaktos) by a relatively steeper hike. but much shorter hike of a total duration of 1,5-2 hours.
The Kefalogyro of Mornos, located below the settlement of Katafyio, is very well preserved from the Ottoman era. From this bridge Nafpaktia communicated with Dorida, especially when the river Mornos was impassable. They passed through it and found shelter in the nearby monastery of Varnakova the survivors of the heroic exodus of Messolonghi (10 April 1826). Starting from Hani tou Loi (15 minutes from Nafpaktos) and hiking without altitude difference, and without any particular difficulties, after less than 1 hour you can cross the this bridge.
The twin waterfalls of Mokistianos are located west of the village of Thermo, Aitoloakarnania (1 hour from Nafpaktos). After an easy hike of about 45 minutes, in good and marked path, starting from the village of Agia Sophia, we are at the lake formed by these twin waterfalls, in which we can swim during the summer months.
Grammeni Oxya, with the peak of Sarandiana (1,932 meters), is located at the northeasternmost tip of Aitoloakarnania, and owes its name to the large coverage of the area by Oxya, being the southernmost point in Europe with such vegetation. It is about 2.5 km away from the
